Across the Atlantic

While the revolution was fought with muskets and cannons in America, in England’s Parliament the weapons were words. Some of the nation’s most eloquent speakers championed the American point of view. But the king and Parliament’s conservative members stood firm. The colonies were too valuable to throw away. They must be taught a lesson. They must remain part of the British Empire.

Many ordinary people believed the war was necessary to rescue the good Americans (the Loyalists) from the bad ones (the patriots). But the war also caused severe hardships in England. Merchants grumbled that it interrupted their profitable trade with the colonies. Homemakers complained about soaring prices in the market. Nearly everyone was indignant over the rise in taxes. But nothing angered the people so much as the impressment of sailors for the British navy.
